thought

/θɔːt/ · thought
noun
  1. A mental form or idea created in the mind, not perceived through the senses. The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.
  2. The process or operation by which mental forms arise or are manipulated; the act of thinking. Without freedom of thought there can be no such thing as wisdom, and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech.
  3. A way of thinking associated with a particular group, nation, or region. Traditional eastern thought differs markedly from that of the west.
verb
  1. To ponder or consider something in one's mind. Idly, the detective thought what his next move should be.
  2. To communicate to oneself in one's mind, often in an attempt to solve a problem. I thought for three hours about the problem and still couldn’t find the solution.
  3. To conceive of something or someone, usually followed by of; infrequently by on. I tend to think of her as rather ugly.
  4. To seem or appear. It seemed that the answer was obvious, but it was not.
Did you know? The word "thought" is both a noun and a verb in modern English, but its dual usage dates back to Old English, where the same form served as the past participle of "think" and as a noun meaning an idea.
